Get Fit and Have Fun! Exercise With Your Dog

Your dog needs exercise and so do you! Why not combine the two? There is no better, healthier, or less expensive exercise than those that take you outside. Running, walking, or hiking are all great options because they give you an opportunity to get your dog’s energy out, provide mental stimulation by getting outside, and it’ll keep you moving as well! However, if you don’t have time for daily outdoor exercise in your schedule, doggy daycare can help!

How Much Exercise Does My Dog Need?

Depending on your dog’s breed, he or she may need anywhere between 30 minutes to two hours of exercise every day. Smaller dogs may need less, while larger dogs may need much more. However, at least 30 minutes of your dog’s daily exercise should be rigorous.

How Much Exercise Do I Need?

If you’re just getting started with exercise, aim for 10 minutes of strenuous effort each day. Take a walk or go for a quick jog. You may not be ready for more exercise than this at first, but as your endurance builds, so can the length of your daily walks or jogs. Likewise, your dog may struggle if he or she is not used to working out by your side.

What Equipment Do I Need?

You’ll need to have a leash for exercising with your dog. Many pet owners choose not to leash their dogs while running or walking. This is dangerous for your dog, other animals, and other people. A running leash should be thick and give you the ability to keep a good grip. Some running leashes have waist attachments that allow you to keep your hands free.

Reflective devices and lights are an important choice if you’ll be running or walking after dark. You can purchase these devices for yourself as well as your dog. It’s also wise to carry water bottles, both for you and your pet. A collapsible water bowl is an easy and inexpensive way to keep your dog well hydrated.
