San Diego and Orange County Dog-Friendly Beaches On and off leash

Taking your dog to a beach is a great way to get exercise, have fun and cool off. However, nothing can ruin a fun day like getting to the beach and finding dogs aren’t allowed. There are plenty of dog-friendly beaches in San Diego. Make sure you know which ones allow dogs, whether leashes are required and what other items you should bring.

Dog-Friendly Beaches in San Diego

  • Dog Beach
Located at Ocean Beach, Dog Beach is arguably the most popular of the San Diego beaches that allow dogs. It is located at the west end of Voltaire Street. Dogs are allowed off-leash throughout the day and night.
  • Fiesta Island
All dogs are allowed to be off leash at Fiesta Island as long as they are not taken into the youth playground or the tern nesting site. Fiesta Island is part of Mission Bay Park at 1590 East Mission Bay Drive.
  • North Beach Dog Run
Also known as Coronado Dog Beach, this beach allows dogs to remain off-leash while on the sand. This beach is located near Sunset Park on Ocean Blvd.
  • Del Mar Dog Beach
At 3200 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar Dog Beach is a seasonal dog beach. From June 16 through Labor Day, dogs are allowed at this beach as long as they remain on a leash.
Don’t forget to bring your favorite coconut!

Orange County Beaches for Dogs

Heading north for the day? There are plenty of Orange County beaches that allow dogs as well. Check out Dana Point Headlands Beach, which allows leashed dogs onsite. If you want an off-leash dog beach, head to Huntington Dog Beach. It is the only beach in Orange County that does not require leashes for dogs.

What to Bring to the Beach

Don’t go to a dog beach empty handed! Being prepared ensures that your day at the beach will be filled with fun. Just as you wouldn’t go to the beach without sunblock and refreshments for yourself, you will need items to keep your dog occupied.

But I want to bring the whole beach home with us!

Food and treats work wonders for dogs who start to get antsy or who need encouragement to behave themselves when in a new environment. Remember, a dog beach will host many other dogs besides your own, not to mention lots of new people and sounds. Treats may help to calm your dog when it is needed most.

You will also need to bring water and a collapsible water dish. A dog that is playing outside in the heat for long periods will need a lot of water for hydration. Plan to bring more than you need. Other helpful items include lots of toys, a leash and waste bags. If you are driving to the beach, don’t forget to place a cover in your car to keep any sand or water from ruining your vehicle’s interior.

Once your beach day is concluded, bring your dog over to Fon Jon for a bath! You can have all of the fun of the beach without bringing the sand home with you.
