Fon Jon Celebrates 70 Years of Pet Care Services in San Diego

The Fon Jon Pet Care services name has a long history in the San Diego area and it all started with two animal lovers, Fon Johnson and his wife Audrie. The young couple met in Los Angeles and were married in 1942. Shortly after they were married they moved when Fon joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, where they remained.

In 1950, since Fon and Audrie had a love for animals they decided to start their first pet care service business in San Diego county. They first opened a kennel business in Santee in the eastern region of San Diego county. Shortly after their next pet care service business was opened in the Mission Bay area, named Fon-Jon Pet Care Center. Then in 1977, Fon and Audrie opened a second pet care service in the San Diego County coastal city of Oceanside.

Fon and Audrie were experienced dog trainers in San Diego with national recognition. They both won a number of awards, including the prestigious Gaines “Fido” award for the person who had contributed to the sport of dog competition and obedience training.

In addition to Fon’s pet care services, Fon pioneered the police K-9 unit and contracted with San Diego County to train the K-9 units. He trained both the dogs and the handlers and at times thought that training the handlers were harder than training the dogs. In a Los Angeles Times article, he stated “The handler has to have coordination, good timing and, most important, a comfort level with his dog,” Fon trained numerous departments and judged many Police K-9 trials, including an International trail in South Africa.

Fon and Audrie were very active in the local dog community in San Diego. They served as board members and were founders of well-known organizations, including:

  • San Diego Humane Society
  • Obedience Club of San Diego County
  • Silver Bay Kennel Club
  • Del Sur Kennel Club
  • American Boarding Kennel Association
  • Humane Society

Fon and Audrie loved their pets and wanted to have a pet care service business where they treated your pets like family. It didn’t matter if your pet came for one day, for a week or every day for daycare, they ensured your pets would be made to feel like they are part of the family. They built a pet care service establishment in San Diego that would set the bar in the pet boarding industry.

Sadly, both Fon and Audrie have passed away, but their love of animals continues on through Fon Jon Pet Care services. Pet care services are located in the San Diego community of Clairemont Mesa conveniently located off of Interstate 5. Fon Jon Pet Care services are proud members of the American Kennel Club and Canine Good Citizen program.

Fon Jon Pet Care services continue the legacy of Fon and Audrie to provide quality pet care services, including:
